The Energetics Technology Center (ETC) is a result of the tireless work of the following partner organizations

Center for Energetic Concepts Development (CECD)

The Center for Energetic Concepts Development (CECD) is the ETC’s parent organization. It is an alliance established in 1998 between NSWC Indian Head and the University of Maryland College Park (UMCP). It is headquartered in the Department of Mechanical Engineering within the James Clark School of Engineering.

The CECD is led by Dr. Dave K. Anand, professor emeritus and former chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at UMCP.

The CECD conceived the ETC as an expansion of its work in Energetics research and education in partnership with NSWC Indian Head.

Naval Surface Warfare Center, Indian Head Division

NSWC Indian Head, through its partnership with UMCP’s Mechanical Engineering Department, is a principal stakeholder in the ETC. Throughout its 116-year history, NSWC Indian Head has been in the forefront of naval ordnance testing, research, and development.

The site on the Indian Head peninsula was originally used as a naval proving ground beginning in 1890. During the 20th century, its function was expanded to include manufacturing and testing of explosives and propellants. It was during this phase that naval ordnance was revolutionized with the discovery of smokeless and flashless powders. After World War II, Indian Head became the home of the first complete facility devoted to the research and development of solid propellants for all types of weapons.

Today, in addition to being the Navy’s premier Energetics laboratory, the base still serves as a testing and scale-up site for a broad range of propellants, pyrotechnics, and plastic-bonded explosives used in naval ordnance.

College of Southern Maryland

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) is a public, regional community college with a far-reaching mission-to help our students and community meet the challenges of individual, social, and global changes.

In cooperation with the College of Southern Maryland the ETC will provide classroom space and training tools to educate the Energetics workforce of the future, including qualified technicians and scientists and engineers with advanced degrees in Energetics.

Industrial Partners

Relationships will be established with various industrial partners with the help of the already-established Board of Advisors of ETC.
